earthquake are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along afault . this is a newly released of energy caused the s e a s m i c waves that makes the groundshake . when two blocks of rock or two plates or rubbing against each other they stick a little . they don't just like smoothly the rock catch on each other . the rocks break because of the pressure that builds up . when the rocks break the earthquake occ urs . during the earthquake and after where the place or blocks of rock start moving and they continue to move until they get stuck . the spot underground where the rock breaks is called the focus of the earthquake . the place right above the focus on top the graph is called the e v i c e n t e r of the earthquake
