Is the earth getting larger and wider when plates drift away from each other?
a.The Earth is not getting larger or smaller. If there is the production of a new seafloor in the mid-ocean ridge, there is a destruction of an old seafloor at subduction zones.
b. The earth is getting larger because of the production of a new seafloor in the mid-ocean ridge
New crust is continually being pushed away from divergent boundaries (where sea-floor spreading occurs), increasing Earth's surface. But the Earth isn't getting any bigger.
