The message of the poem is to always treat people nicely even if they are not treating you well for you and even if they wouldn't acknoledge your good deeds, the important thing is that you know to yourself that you didn't do something wrong.

I strongly agree with the message. We all know that people have different attitudes and it is much better to treat everybody with respect if they deserve it. We can't change them always because that's who they are and their well-being but being good would mean one less hatred that would spread in the society we live in.
