Longitudinal Wave
Longitudinal waves are waves consisting of a periodic disturbance or vibration that takes place in the same direction as the advance of the wave. Sound moving through the air also compresses and rarefies the gas in the direction of travel of the sound wave as they vibrate back and forth.
Examples of longitudinal waves include:
- sound waves.
- ultrasound waves.
- seismic P-waves.
A sound wave traveling through air is a classic example of a longitudinal wave. As a sound wave moves from the lips of a speaker to the ear of a listener, particles of air vibrate back and forth in the same direction and the opposite direction of energy transport.
