Since meiosis is reductional division, the number of chromosomes is reduced to half.
Meiosis takes place at the time of formation of gametes , both in plants and animals. Gametes are haploid I. e have half the number of chromosomes. and the mother cells forming gametes are diploid,I. e they have double the number of chromosomes.
