Answer:
Bad parenting. In other words: lack of wholesome human connection in the early years of life. In addition to this, we have an increasing need for critical parenting in an increasingly complex world. When we were all hunter-gatherers, life itself provided some built-in discipline. Today, critical parenting is needed now more then ever.
If every child had at least one responsible, healthy adult with whom they had a wholesome connection while growing up, then the world would be unrecognizable. Because every child would turn into an adult who is more capable of being accountable for who they are, their actions, their decisions, how they treat others, etc. Their values would be more in line with a healthy planet. And any of the various societal problems that do occur would be met with more critical minds. There would be a lot less apathy, deliberate ignorance, addictions…(my dad was once asked by a reporter canvassing the public for their opinion on what is the worst addiction, his answer was ‘status quo’).
In the early years, without knowing it, we starve for a healthy connection. And if we don’t have that connection, there is a void that simply must be filled. Unfortunately, in an increasingly complex world, that void is too often filled with whatever is accessible and whatever is accessible is often unhealthy. So, we have a lot of adults now who value fame, money, power etc, instead of having gratitude for the more simple and basic things in life such as running water and laughter with loved ones.
