MANILA (Reuters Life!) - Are they brass bands or wind ensembles? The traditional "musikong bumbong" marching bands of the Philippines are bound to confuse music buffs because their instruments are made entirely out of bamboo.
The bands, whose name means "bamboo music", give marching tunes a distinctly Asian twist, using the grass which is indigenous in South East Asia to create instruments such as saxophones, clarinets, tubas and flutes.
The bands trace their roots to the end of the 19th century, when revolutionaries were fighting Spanish colonial rule. The first band is believed to have been formed in 1896 and performed patriotic songs for the fighters.
