A boy who is lifting a pail of water does work lifting the pail of water and it's force to carry and distance to the water, A boy who carrying books does not work because when you are holding a book, the force you exert is upwards ( to support it's weight ). but when you walk you are moving horizontally, so no work is done on the book.
