- The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), a projective psychological test, isn't the most empirical thing in the world, but it's still useful — and interesting. The client essentially tells a subjective story about each of a series of (rather dated) black-and-white scenes. Therapist and client then look for recurring themes in the stories, sometimes providing surprising insight into client concerns.
