Sagot :
WHY IS IT DIFFICULT TO DEFINE A STATE?
Answer:
If you mean one of the United States, it is not. Each state, when it entered the Union, had its boundaries defined by Congress. You can look up “The Toledo War” as an interesting example of that, how the State of Ohio got the Toledo Strip, and the Territory of Michigan was compensated by being awarded the UP when it entered the Union.
If you mean countries, there either are recognized borders or disputed land in between, which could lead to hostilities. The border between Egypt and Sudan is interesting. There is one area that both countries claim, but also one area which neither one wants
Or do you mean states of matter, such as solid, liquid gas, etc? Sometimes they are hard to define. Glass, for example, is in actuality a very, very viscous liquid, not a solid, and it will flow. Windows in very old buildings can be measured and they are thicker at the bottom than at the top. Glass is a supercooled liquid, meaning that thermodynamically it wants to crystallize. I once saw that happen to the back window of a car. It was about 1964 or so. I was walking on a street in New York. I heard a kind of crackling sound. In about 2 seconds the entire back window of a car became sand. As a typical New Yorker at that time, I increased my pace lest I get blamed for it
