Well, You must have heard about buglar alarms, fire alarms. They all works on the principle of light conversion to electricity.

This is known as photoelectric effect. Eg: cathode ray tubes on tv, led etc… Einstien explained about this and gave a photo electric equation about incidence of light and emission of photoelectrons which constitues current.

 

The photocell consists of a cathode ( electron donor) and a anode ( electron receptor). When the cathode is lighted up , it emits electrons to anode. As we know the flow of electron or charge constitutes the current, it produces electricity.
