November 1, 2020 was one of the most stressful days I’ve gone through. I couldn’t remember the last time Super Typhoon Signal No. 4 was raised in Metro Manila. What I remember were the times when the apartment we once lived in was battered by typhoons. It was traumatizing. And I prayed hard for my children not to go through something like it.
By early evening, news broke that Rolly’s path had altered and would miss Manila. My wife and I whispered a prayer of thanks. Then my thoughts went to my relatives back in Bicol.
As a child in the country’s “typhoon belt,” I learned that if a super typhoon like Rolly changed its path or weakened it could only mean one thing – something “broke” it. If this particular typhoon’s path was a bit north, that “something” would be the Sierra Madre mountain range
