You can identify it in using 5 whole steps.
Ex: Key of C
The relative minor key of C is A minor.
Using a 5 whole steps:
C D E F G A B
E to F was a Half step. C to D is Whole step E to F is Half step and G to A is Whole step. If you are going to count it C(1), D(2) , E and F(3), G(4) and A(5). This is my simple method to find a relative minor key of major scale.
