The Teacher-Powered Schools Initiative was started in May 2014 with the purpose of recognizing the achievements of the more than 150 teacher-led schools around the country and inspiring additional teacher teams to take command of their own schools or build and manage new ones.
While the initiative recognizes the importance of many other initiatives aimed at improving teacher leadership and professionalism, such as providing pathways for advancement without leaving the classroom, amplifying teachers' voices, and fostering PLCs, our primary focus is on assisting teacher teams in securing collective autonomy to design and run schools.
Importantly, the effort does not go against the wishes of the principals. Leaders are present in all teacher-led institutions, and many have a principal. The difference is that in a teacher-led school, the collective group of teachers has final decision-making authority. Teachers identify students' needs and create schools that cater to them. Administrators are chosen by teachers and work to support the decisions of teacher teams, not the other way around. This is essentially the "professional partnership" organizational structure, which is popular in other industries, but not in public education.
