C. LEARNING TASK 3:
Use a slinky wave in this activity and answer the given questions.

(Note: You may use unused notebook metal spring as alternative if slinky wave is not available at home)

1. Prepare a slinky and a masking tape.
2. Mark a spot on their slinky near the center with masking tape at the top of the loop.
3. Ask someone from your family to hold each end of the slinky. Stretch out the slinky along a table.
4. Take turn in compressing 15 coils and then releasing them rapidly while they hold the end of the slinky, making sure to observe the energy wave travel the length of the slinky.
Guide Questions:
1.Describe your observations of the coil and tape.
2.What kind of seismic wave does this slinky motion represent?

Sagot :

Answer:

Seismic waves are a type of low-frequency acoustic energy, which

moves along in different layers of the Earth and causes Earthquakes, Eruptions of Volcanoes,  Movement of Magma underground and Landslides.

Explanation:

Here are the steps in using a Slinky for creating Seismic Waves:

1. You can either get another person to hold the other side of the Slinky or else use masking tape to connect the other part of the Slinky into a wall or bar.

2.  To create a wave, Pull and Push away the Slinky towards you.

3. To understand the different kinds of waves, Shaking the one side end of the Slinkyby doing an Up and Down Motion.

4. This time, combine the Push and Pull and the Up and down motions.

It should come out in a circular way.

5. Last is to get another Slinky and place it above the first one.

Make a movement of side to side for both of the Slinky.

This movement will help you understand the Love wave which is known

as a transverse type of wave which has a similarity to the Rayleigh Wave which is compacted to the surface of the Earth.
