Earthquakes are a common occurrence, rumbling below Earth's surface thousands of times every day. But major earthquakes are less common. Here are some things to do to prepare for an earthquake and what to do once the ground starts shaking. 1. Have an earthquake readiness plan. 2. Consult a professional to learn how to make your home sturdier, such as bolting bookcases to wall studs, installing strong latches on cupboards, and strapping the water heater to wall studs. 3.Locate a place in each room of the house that you can go to in case of an earthquake. 4. Keep a supply of canried food, an up-to date first aid kit, 3 gal- loons (11.4 liters) of water per person, dust masks and goggles, and a working battery-operated radio and flashlights. 5. Know how to turn off your gas and water mains. 6. Practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On with family and coworkers. 7. Secure heavy items in your home like bookcases, refrigerators, televisions and objects that hang on walls. Store heavy and breakable objects on low shelves. 8. Create a family emergency communications plan that has an out-of-state contact. Plan where to meet if you get separated. 9. Make a supply kit that includes enough food and water for at least three days, a flashlight, a fire extinguisher and a whistle.
